Zhao Changshi was a loyal and brave general in the Tang Dynasty of China. In a fierce battle, he fought valiantly against the enemy but was unexpectedly stabbed in the chest with a sword. He fell from his horse and lost consciousness on the spot. His fresh blood stained the ground, his eyes lost their luster, and his soul drifted towards the underworld.
At around four in the morning, he suddenly felt as if he were in a dream. He heard his superior calling out names, and individuals responded one after another. Zhao Changshi attentively listened as it seemed like the names were being called in alphabetical order. He thought that these people were comrades like him, heroes sacrificed for the country. He didn't know if his name would be called, and he didn't understand the significance of this roll call. He simply waited quietly. When it was over, he heard no more voices.
After a while, the sky brightened, and Zhao Changshi gradually woke up. To his surprise, he was still alive. Enduring the pain, he got up to assess the situation. Shockingly, the soldiers who answered their names the night before were all dead, their bodies lying on the ground. He realized that it was a roll call from the underworld, meant to collect the souls of the deceased. Zhao Changshi didn't know why he wasn't taken; perhaps there was an unfulfilled wish. Dragging his heavy body, he returned to the camp. After a month of rest, his wounds finally healed. He learned that even those who died in battle had their destinies-some fated to die on the battlefield, while others managed to survive against all odds.
