In the county town, there was a man named Pang, who was remarkably handsome and carried himself with grace. In the same county, there was a girl from the Shi family who was both beautiful and intelligent, and she had not yet married. One day, Pang visited the Shi family, and the girl secretly stole a glance at him, which ignited her feelings for him. Afterward, she often sought him out to meet and talk.
Before long, Pang's wife discovered the existence of this girl. His wife, consumed by jealousy, ordered the maidservant to tie up the girl and send her back to the Shi family. However, on their way, the girl transformed into a wisp of smoke and disappeared. The maidservant had no choice but to proceed directly to the Shi family and inform the girl's father about the incident. The girl's father was greatly surprised and said, "My daughter has never left the house; how could you accuse her of this?" Since then, Pang's wife began to keep a close watch on him.
One evening, she happened to see the girl in Pang's room and personally took her to the Shi family. When the girl's father saw her, he was astonished and said, "I had just come out of the room and saw my daughter with her mother. How could she be here?" He then instructed the maidservant and servants to call for his daughter inside the house. Upon inspection, they discovered that the bound girl had suddenly vanished.
The father felt that something was amiss and asked his daughter to explain. She said, "A few years ago, Pang came to our house, and I secretly stole a glance at him. Since then, it seems like I frequently go to find him in my dreams. Every time I enter his house, I am caught by his wife." The father was taken aback and said, "Such a strange occurrence in the world! It turns out your infatuation was so deep that your soul wandered away, and the one who disappeared was your spirit."
The daughter vowed not to marry anyone else. After a year, Pang's wife suddenly fell ill with an unusual ailment that neither doctors nor medicines could cure. Pang then offered the Shi family a sum of money and took the girl as his wife. From that point on, they loved and respected each other, living a happy life together.
